The summertime seems to have passed by so quickly, yet there was certainly no shortage of activity for the Legacy Arts Project. With the 4th Dance Africa Pittsburgh, “The Healing”, the Bara Makono Summer Program (hosted in conjunction with the Sankofa Village for the Arts), and the FABA Party in conjunction with Cafe Con Leche, art of the African diaspora abounded for youth and adults alike. It was a blessing to be able to honor the legendary founder of Dance Africa, Baba Chuck Davis, with a proclamation from the City of Pittsburgh, naming July 18, 2015 ‘Dr. Charles Davis Day’. Likewise, it was momentous to complete our inaugural 7-week summer program with approximately 30 youth from the region and a pleasure to collaborate with the burgeoning Latino community of Pittsburgh for our FABA Party. Lots accomplished and lots still to learn. Such is the gift of life and the blessings of art!
Moving into the fall, while getting ready for the 9th Annual Keepers of the Flame Awards Production, we are hosting our weekly classes at Sankofa Village. You can find us there working in conjunction with Anthony Baron and Project Tambour Cimmaron (Drums of Freedom), exploring music and movement of the Caribbean. The work of the Orishas (Yoruba deities) is growing in Pittsburgh, and if you are unfamiliar, not for long. Stay posted for the work of Legacy, Project Tambour Cimmaron and others as we engage in the traditions and art of our Caribbean relatives as we seek deeper connection with ourselves, ancestors, and creator. Blessings!
Dance Africa 2015 took place July 17 & 18. This years celebration featured Kulu Mele African Dance and Drum Ensemeble, Pittsburgh's own Balafon West African Youth Dance Ensemble and The Legacy Arts Project Community Dance Ensemble. This years Dance Africa celebrated the music and dance of West Africa and the Caribbean. Here are some photos that captured just a taste of the festive weekend. Stay tune for Dance Africa 2016.
Greetings from Bara Makono Summer Program
As the summer of 2015 comes to a close, so did our Bara Makono Summer Program. Bara Makono was able to take trips to the Carnegie Science Center and The National Aviary. The kids said there farewell by putting on a final performance for friends and family. We hope to have another successful summer program next year.
