The Legacy Arts Project hosts several projects, performances, and events through the year, each geared towards providing an opportunity for community to gather and culture to flourish.

Youth Drum Class

SATURDAYS, FEBRUARY 09 - JUNE 01, 2019
2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

  • Takes place Saturdays from 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

  • For elementary students, ages 6 and up

  • Lead Instructor: Dante Mitchell

  • Registration required. Enrollment accepted on a first come, first serve basis. Space is limited.

The Youth Drum Class strives to provide students with an impactful cultural arts experience! Students will adventure into many cultures and explore rhythms throughout West Africa! This experience will enable students to increase their awareness, knowledge and skills of West African drumming.

First sessions students will:

  • Recognize map of Africa

  • Identify West Africa on a map, specifically three countries: Guinea, Senegal and Mali

  • Learn Traditional West African rhythms

  • Learn basic fundamentals of hand and stick drumming

  • Learn basic drumming exercises

Capoeira

  • Takes place Fridays:

    • from 6:00 pm - 6:50 pm for ages 6 to 10

    • from 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm for ages 11 to 15

  • Lead Instructor: Akinlana Lowman

  • Registration required. Enrollment accepted on a first come, first serve basis. Space is limited.

Capoeira is a dynamic martial art/cultural art. Capoeira combines a unique fighting style, dance, acrobatics, music, language, and discipline! In Akinlana’s Capoeira class students will learn discipline, self defense, relaxation through musical meditation, health and education through this fun dynamic art form!!

Nia African Dance

Nia African Dance is dance done with intention and purpose!! Our class provides healing from trauma and promotes confidence and good self esteem, as well as physical fitness!
