The Legacy Arts Project is excited to announce that we and our partners in The Creative Learning Network are back with more great opportunities for teaching artists in Allegheny County.

• $250 stipend for teaching artists participating in a professional learning opportunity

• Access weekly professional learning sessions hosted by APOST. Session topics will include:

  • Ask-Listen-Encourage

  • Social Emotional Learning and Intro to Simple Interactions

  • Collective Knowledge Session on Social Emotional Learning

  • Youth Voice

  • Collective Knowledge Session on Youth Voice

  • Creating Positive Environments

  • Foundations of anti-racist, trauma-informed and Health-focused out-of-school time activities

  • Collective Knowledge Session on Antiracism

  • Stages of Youth Development

The momentum of a fresh start is with us and we've refreshed our engagement with this 'work'. More than 'just a job', we (the Legacy team) talk about the congruence within our lives, that this 'work' of Legacy is a part of how we each chronicle our journeys and tell the stories of our lives. We live through this, extending ourselves to connect with friends and fellow artists in this community of humanity. It is an honor to share in this season of programming. Take a look and see what 'tickles your fancy' and share info with other friends who may find interest. There is much love in the world and we take it upon ourselves as a part of our 'job' to reflect it back! Fridays 7:00 - 8:00pm, ages 11-15 6:00 - 6:50pm, ages 6-10 Legacy Studio Taught by the charismatic and multi-talented, Baba Akin Lowman, this inaugural class of Capoiera is a first of its kind with Legacy. We are excited to host Akin as he shares his knowledge and wisdom of this traditional Afro Brazilian martial art with the youth. More info Saturdays 2:00 - 3:00pm Legacy Studio The drum has long been know to be a sacred instrument, one that allowed us to communicate with each other and beyond. In this class taught by Dante Mitchell, students learn about the history of the drum as well as rhythms associated with it. More info Saturdays 3:00 - 4:00pm Legacy Studio This class is non-traditional African dance class where the goals are to build confidence, heal the heart, and strengthen the dancers. Students are exposed to various genres of dance. Taught by Ebony Zanuwa, Nia Afro Movement is for girls ages 6-13. More info March 14 - April 4 Legacy Studio Taugut by Linsey McDaniel, this class is about getting tight while letting loose to West African rhythms. Chrisala teaches this class from her wealth of experience with dance forms from around the world. His journey has led him to study with master Senegalese artists, emboldening him with a deep insight into the movement and culture of Senegal. Oronde rounds out the spring session with classes rooted in the honoring of the Jola and Mandinka people. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/african-dance-series-senegalese-dance-tickets-57058705123 Saturdays 10:30-11:30 am/Legacy Studio Before there was Legacy Arts, there was the Pittsburgh Black Theater Dance Ensemble (PBTDE). Under the direction of the late Bob Johnson, the ensemble existed as a part of the University of Pittsburgh yet set its roots deep into the Black arts community of Pittsburgh. Many great years of expression and exploration exposed the PBTDE artists to varied aspects of themselves, birthing in many an unlimited creativity that continues to be passed down to others. The Legacy Arts Project pays tribute to the work that has been done before, honoring the lasting contributions have that have reached through to the present day. March 16-April 6   Norma Jean Barnes is a fluid dancer, teacher and choreographer in modern and African dance techniques. Photo credit: Angela Perry Latest News with Legacy Arts So much has transpired since our last newsletter in August. The unease of humanity, striking within hearts and homes around the world. None of us immune. What becomes of our time, our presence, our interactions with each other? What is our responsibility to this lifetime? As an arts organization, what is our duty? What is our role? As we seek the answers as an organization, it becomes clear that the journey is personal. We must embody and enact the very ideals that wish to see in the world. We must show up, ready to love who we are, loving each other, and intending the healing of humanity. Since last you heard from us, we've been in a state of transition. Preparing to move from one space to another has had us a little off the radar. Nevertheless, we have continued our momentum, bubbling beneath the surface, preparing for the seasons ahead. And we return with renewed senses, feelings of gratitude for our work; that of Legacy, the arts community, the city of Pittsburgh, and the world. We realize that we are here to create, express, and experience the wonders and love of being human - mind, body, and spirit. The requirements for nominees is that they have been producing creative works of the African diaspora in Pittsburgh for at least 20 years. Click here to make a nomination Gwen's Girls and Legacy Arts African dance is widely seen as a way to expose youth and adults to dance and drums of Africa, that it is good exercise and fun to do. For most, all of that is true. For Legacy, we know that its all that, then some. The new partnership between Gwen's Girls and Legacy bring approximately 20 girls to experience movement, art-making, and group conversation weekly, all for the sake of cultural exposure and well-being. Legacy adopts the maxim that people are able to thrive when they know who they are. We work with artists to create programming that strengthens self-identity, builds creative skills, and embraces the uniqueness of each individual. The partnership is scheduled to continue through the new year. Upcoming Events Did You Say You Want to DANCE!!! African, Hip Hop, Salsa, and Tap - Movement for the Mind, Body & Soul Now Through February 'Mamas with Grace' Dance Class  With Ebony Naimah Zanuwa Come move to the rhythms of African music from around the world. Tailored to your body and mobility, this class is for those who want to move with safety and enjoyment. 1pm - 2:30pm (every Saturday through February) For The Mature and Beginners Class fee: $5 Special Guest Dec 1stNorma Jean Barnes Register for Class Join us for our second installment of 'Hip Hop and the Get Down Gang'. Known throughout the region as the hottest Hip Hop Group in Pittsburgh, each member brings their skill, passion, and knowledge to any dance class, studio or stage. We are honored to host them for classes open to all ages. Class fee: $10 November 17th, 6pm - 7:30pm Instructor: Pyurtek  November 30th, 6pm - 7:30pm Instructor: Stealth    February 2019: TBD Instructor: Cuba Register for Class Salsa Con Savor Workshop With Ryan Mitchell Join us December 15th from 4:30pm - 6:00pm for hot Salsa with our friend, Ryan Mitchell. Class fee: $15 Open to all ages Register for Class Art of Sound "Rhythms of the World" Whether you have experience with Tap or not, but you have an interest to try, this is the workshop for you.
