The Legacy Arts Project: Covid Protocol

Returning to dance safely requires us all to adhere to the minimum requirements.  As a reminder, this includes wearing a facial covering at all times while teaching and taking classes and while moving about inside the building, with the exception of when eating or drinking.    Anyone entering the studio, including parents and siblings at drop off, will be required to have their temperature checked and their hands sanitized or washed before entering our space.  Sanitizer will be available at the entrance and inside of the studio.

We kindly ask that parents of young dancers limit one adult for drop off and pick up to reduce traffic flow in our common areas.  Additionally, we will be practicing social distancing and working to keep all students 6ft apart during every class.  We ask that everyone adhere to social distancing standards in common areas as well.

We are also requiring that all students and families engage in a daily self-assessment.  If anyone in your family is showing symptoms, we kindly ask that you refrain from coming to class and instead log into class at home from ZOOM. 

Expectations for Students Returning from Travel 

We are requiring that students entering Pennsylvania from other countries and states, as well as Pennsylvanians who are returning home from other countries or states, have a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours prior to entering the Commonwealth or quarantine for 10 days upon entry into Pennsylvania. If a traveler chooses to get tested upon entering the Commonwealth, or is waiting for test results, the traveler must quarantine for 10 days, or until receipt of a negative test result, whichever comes first. Virtual options will always be available should one need to quarantine. 

Studio Space

Our dance studio has undergone a number of modifications, including assessment for capacity, modification of furniture to include personal spaces for belongings, addition of hand sanitizing stations, and plans for enhanced cleaning. Nearby facilities, such as restrooms, have also been assessed for capacity, flow and enhanced cleaning protocols.  Studio and doors will be cleaned by faculty at the end of each class. Students will clean chairs that they use to hold their belongings.

Note

This also applies to any adult classes that may be held in The Legacy Arts Studio in the future as well. As we move classes outside we will also maintain the wearing of masks and social distancing. Although other states are opening up and Vaccinations are being given we at this time are still following the protocol we have been following for everyone's safety.  Thank you for your cooperation.

The momentum of a fresh start is with us and we've refreshed our engagement with this 'work'. More than 'just a job', we (the Legacy team) talk about the congruence within our lives, that this 'work' of Legacy is a part of how we each chronicle our journeys and tell the stories of our lives. We live through this, extending ourselves to connect with friends and fellow artists in this community of humanity. It is an honor to share in this season of programming. Fridays 7:00 - 8:00pm, ages 11-15 6:00 - 6:50pm, ages 6-10 Legacy Studio Taught by the charismatic and multi-talented, Baba Akin Lowman, this inaugural class of Capoiera is a first of its kind with Legacy. We are excited to host Akin as he shares his knowledge and wisdom of this traditional Afro Brazilian martial art with the youth. More info Saturdays 2:00 - 3:00pm Legacy Studio The drum has long been know to be a sacred instrument, one that allowed us to communicate with each other and beyond. In this class taught by Dante Mitchell, students learn about the history of the drum as well as rhythms associated with it. More info Saturdays 3:00 - 4:00pm Legacy Studio This class is non-traditional African dance class where the goals are to build confidence, heal the heart, and strengthen the dancers. Students are exposed to various genres of dance. Taught by Ebony Zanuwa, Nia Afro Movement is for girls ages 6-13. More info March 14 - April 4 Legacy Studio Taugut by Linsey McDaniel, this class is about getting tight while letting loose to West African rhythms. Under the direction of the late Bob Johnson, the ensemble existed as a part of the University of Pittsburgh yet set its roots deep into the Black arts community of Pittsburgh. Many great years of expression and exploration exposed the PBTDE artists to varied aspects of themselves, birthing in many an unlimited creativity that continues to be passed down to others. The Legacy Arts Project pays tribute to the work that has been done before, honoring the lasting contributions have that have reached through to the present day. March 16-April 6   Norma Jean Barnes is a fluid dancer, teacher and choreographer in modern and African dance techniques. None of us immune. What becomes of our time, our presence, our interactions with each other? What is our responsibility to this lifetime? As an arts organization, what is our duty? What is our role? As we seek the answers as an organization, it becomes clear that the journey is personal. We must embody and enact the very ideals that wish to see in the world. We must show up, ready to love who we are, loving each other, and intending the healing of humanity. Since last you heard from us, we've been in a state of transition. Preparing to move from one space to another has had us a little off the radar. Nevertheless, we have continued our momentum, bubbling beneath the surface, preparing for the seasons ahead. And we return with renewed senses, feelings of gratitude for our work; that of Legacy, the arts community, the city of Pittsburgh, and the world. We realize that we are here to create, express, and experience the wonders and love of being human - mind, body, and spirit. The requirements for nominees is that they have been producing creative works of the African diaspora in Pittsburgh for at least 20 years. Click here to make a nomination Gwen's Girls and Legacy Arts African dance is widely seen as a way to expose youth and adults to dance and drums of Africa, that it is good exercise and fun to do. For most, all of that is true. For Legacy, we know that its all that, then some. The new partnership between Gwen's Girls and Legacy bring approximately 20 girls to experience movement, art-making, and group conversation weekly, all for the sake of cultural exposure and well-being. Legacy adopts the maxim that people are able to thrive when they know who they are. We work with artists to create programming that strengthens self-identity, builds creative skills, and embraces the uniqueness of each individual. The partnership is scheduled to continue through the new year. Upcoming Events Did You Say You Want to DANCE!!! Known throughout the region as the hottest Hip Hop Group in Pittsburgh, each member brings their skill, passion, and knowledge to any dance class, studio or stage.
