The African Diaspora Unites! View this email in your browser The youth of Dance to Save Lives and the Haiti Dance Company perform at Carnaval, Jacmel, Haiti 2016. Happy February, Happy Black History Month!! In honor of the remembrance of the history and accomplishments of African Americans, I am reminded also about our connections across waters and lands. The idea of 'ubuntu' resounds, "I am because you are. Because you are I am." During the month of December, Legacy Arts had the great and extraordinary opportunity to travel Jacmel, Haiti. Hosted by the noble Dieufel Lamisere, Erin Perry, Shabaka Perkins, and Nick Spivey were introduced to and embraced by our Haitian relatives. The idea had already been put into motion about bringing Dieufel and his group, Dance to Save Lives/Haiti Dance Co, to Pittsburgh for Dance Africa in July. It was the stay there that brought the idea into a more concrete notion as fundraising plans continue to unfold. More than their performance in our local event, it is the connection of Haiti to Pittsburgh, of the history to the present, and of where we are to where we are going. May this month, and this year, bring us reminders of the connection within humanity, those throughout the African diaspora as well as those throughout the world. Drum Circle 2016 Negril Treehouse More than 40 people from five cities traveled to Negril, Jamaica for the 4th Drum Circle, hosted by Legacy Arts member Cindy Adams Glenn and her long time friend, Gail Biggs Jackson Brooks. Under the direction of Glenn and hospitality of resort owner, Brooks, the 3 day event combined drum and dance in the festive and tranquil atmosphere of an oceanfront setting. Drummers and dancers from the US were joined by our island family to celebrate the vibrations being lifted up. Cultures of the African diaspora unite!! One of the things we are most proud of at ‪#1Hood‬ is our ability to tell our own stories. Uncensored. No translation needed. As such, we have started a blog series entitled Who am I.
