SPECIAL THANKS!

We'd like to send our thanks out to all who showed their support (parents, staff, teaching artists, the community, and our sponsors) for the youth and programming of The Legacy Arts Project. A wonderful, enriching time was had and we look forward to a great school year!

Saihou Njie screenprinting t-shirts at Sankofa Village for the Arts for the Bara Makono Summer Arts program.
In addition to the Bara Makono Summer Arts Program, held in conjunction with the Sankofa Village for the Arts, the Legacy Arts Project hosted programming with middle school youth from both the Woodland Hills and Wilkinsburg School Districts. It was an honor to work with masterful artists Saihou Njie, who shared clothing design, and 'Mama' Kadiatou Conte-Forte, who shared West African drumming. In addition, artists Erin Perry and Genia Guirand brought photography/writing and Haitian dance respectively. Facilitated by the Consortium for Public Education, Legacy Arts will be hosting after school programming with middle school youth from Woodland Hills. We're getting ready for the 9th Annual Keepers of the Flame and the 5th Dance Africa, and the youth of Woodland Hills are right in the mix!
Special thanks to the Heinz Endowments and Highmark for Dance Africa; to the Heinz Endowments, Grable Foundation, and Tickets for Kids for the Bara Makono Summer Program; the Pittsburgh Foundation for support of our year-long programming.

Dance Africa recap, Summer Program highlights, special events & more.
View this email in your browser
The summertime seems to have passed by so quickly, yet there was certainly no shortage of activity for the Legacy Arts Project. With the 4th Dance Africa Pittsburgh, “The Healing”, the Bara Makono Summer Program (hosted in conjunction with the Sankofa Village for the Arts), and the FABA Party in conjunction with Cafe Con Leche, art of the African diaspora abounded for youth and adults alike. It was a blessing to be able to honor the legendary founder of Dance Africa, Baba Chuck Davis, with a proclamation from the City of Pittsburgh, naming July 18, 2015 ‘Dr. Charles Davis Day’. Likewise, it was momentous to complete our inaugural 7-week summer program with approximately 30 youth from the region and a pleasure to collaborate with the burgeoning Latino community of Pittsburgh for our FABA Party. Lots accomplished and lots still to learn. Such is the gift of life and the blessings of art!

Moving into the fall, while getting ready for the 9th Annual Keepers of the Flame Awards Production, we are hosting our weekly classes at Sankofa Village. You can find us there working in conjunction with Anthony Baron and Project Tambour Cimmaron (Drums of Freedom), exploring music and movement of the Caribbean. The work of the Orishas (Yoruba deities) is growing in Pittsburgh, and if you are unfamiliar, not for long. Stay posted for the work of Legacy, Project Tambour Cimmaron and others as we engage in the traditions and art of our Caribbean relatives as we seek deeper connection with ourselves, ancestors, and creator. Blessings!

Dance Africa

Dance Africa 2015 took place July 17 & 18. This years celebration featured Kulu Mele African Dance and Drum Ensemeble, Pittsburgh's own Balafon West African Youth Dance Ensemble and The Legacy Arts Project Community Dance Ensemble. This years Dance Africa celebrated the music and dance of West Africa and the Caribbean. Here are some photos that captured just a taste of the festive weekend. Stay tune for Dance Africa 2016.

View this email in your browser
It's a new season, although a little difficult to tell which one. Soon enough these cold days are destined to give way to the bright, sunshine that many of us long for with gratitude. And as we head into the summer, Legacy is busy preparing for all the cultural festivities and enjoyment that await us. Next week its our signature FABA Party. For Artists By Artists, that's how we get down - honoring the craft and creativity of our peers, intergenerationally. Whether you sing, rap, dance, or like to vibe, the place for you is the Kelly Strayhorn Theater, next Friday, May 29th, 8pm-11pm. $5 cover. Check out all the upcoming community events. Lots to do in the city and many ways to support art and culture in the community!

Giving a HUGE shout-out to the Ujamaa Collective and the "Cooperation Over Competition" Campaign launching on Saturday, May 30. Designed as a way to foster collective support and economics of  local businesses and artists, members joining at the $100 level receive discounts while shopping with Ujamaa and contribute to the circulation of dollars within our community. Check out the Black Star Celebration below as Ujamaa launches the campaign on the 5th anniversary of the collective. See you there!

So much going on and I want to give a proper shout out to each. The Kelly Strayhorn Theater is hosting Full Bloom 2015. It's their signature summer party where they raise funds for programming that reaches right into the community. Then there's Pittsburgh's Juneteenth and Community Awareness Day Festival on June 13th and 14th down in Market Square where folks from all over the city, across the three rivers, will be performing, vending, and celebrating the liberation of the enslaved people in Texas. Coming up in July, there will be a weekend celebration of African Arts in Pittsburgh. The Haramabe Ujima and Legacy Arts are teaming up to spread the word, joy, and appreciation for African arts, including Dance Africa: Pittsburgh and the Harambe African Arts Festival.

Kwame Ross Residency Comes to a Close
Guest artist, Kwame Ross, seated center in the yellow shirt, speaks to the Legacy artists following a rehearsal. The intergenerational group listens as he encourages the process of developing synergy between drummers and dancers.

It's been a few extra weeks since our last newsletter. We're working towards a bi-weekly schedule, but got a little off-track during the two week residency of a Legacy friend and guest artist, Kwame Ross. With an extensive background in music, dance, and history of the African Diaspora, Mr. Ross infuses his cultural knowledge into the community process of Legacy Arts. He reminds us of the correspondence between art and life, that function exists if that is what we seek to employ. And we do! Our practice of art is for the sake of 'transformance', to serve as a continuation of history, to communicate the wealth, depth, and majesty of our ancestors. 'Lest we not forget'. We say 'thank you' to Kwame and all that he shared during his time here and are looking forward to his return in June.

Legacy Arts and the eSTEAM Program
Youth participants in the photography workshop of the eSTEAM Program.

Photography and youth often go hand-and-hand and with the prevalence of Smart phones, selfies are all the rage. But there is much more to photography than instant access granted by cellphones and the Legacy Arts Project has been invited by the Woodland Hills Academy to enrich the understanding of youth participants of the eSTEAM Program. Seventh and eighth grade girls in the after school program are participating in a three-week photography workshop conducted by Erin Perry who is encouraging an understanding of photography as a tool to document, archive, and spread a message. The students will be completing group projects that highlight their growing sisterhood within the program and will be displayed at their year-end celebration at the end of May.
Spring FABA Party postponed to a later date.
Many congratulations to HDAT and the seven women choreographers for the Second Annual Spring Concert. Youth and arts in the community is an investment in the future and we give thanks to all of the work being done by the Hill Dance Academy Theater!

It’s official, Spring is here!! And how joyful we are. If you ask me, that’s one of the biggest benefits to living in this region of the world, the gratitude you experience once the winter doldrums give way to the renewal of the earth. And how inspiring this time is! Art abounds as folks clamor their way from the confines of ‘home’ to share in the celebration of creativity with others. The Black Arts scene in Pittsburgh has something for everyone and we’re doing our best to bring you notice of the who, what, when, where, and why. The world becomes a bit more beautiful with each effort to create, and even more so when it is witnessed by others. Come on out, hang with a friend, bring the kids, or just roll solo, and enjoy the fresh air with a dose of art. It’s all good for your soul!

Artist Spotlight

Patricia Reynolds-Ford

Years ago, a good friend told me, "If you can walk, you can dance." These days, I take it a bit further and say that if you can move, you can dance. It's like a natural instinct to respond to musical rhythms, something that stirs you from the inside until you cannot resist the urge to be joyful. At the core of Patricia Reynolds Ford is just that, an obvious and contagious pleasure that is exuded at the sound of music.

But she tells us that was not her introduction into dance. As a young girl, she was was to herself, quiet, not quite the social butterfly she has grown into as an adult. Her parents enrolled her in Abby Lee's Dance School, the same Abby Lee from the network reality show. Before the glitz and glamour of dance school celebrity, Patty, as she is known by most, began to come out of her shell. Recitals and performances led her to Pittsburgh CAPA (Creative and Performing Arts) High School, where she realized her love of, and calling for, dance.

Although Patty loves to move, that is not her only art form. She finished high school and pursued her interests in cosmetology, becoming the hairstylist that she is today. Working at the King of Kings Fine Arts Studio on Frankstown Avenue in Wilkinsburg, she has built up a clientele of friends who support her passion for dance. They attend the Legacy Arts events that Patty has been performing in for the last four years. Community festivals, Keepers of the Flame, and Dance Africa have been the venues where Patty has showcased her love of dance. She finds joy in dancing with friends in the community and is strengthening her legacy daily as her own six year old dancing daughter is quickly filling her shoes.

Patty says about dance, "It makes me happy. I can be having a crazy day, but when you're out there, all of that goes away."

Join Patty and the community dancers at the Sankofa Village for the Arts, Mondays and Wednesdays at 6pm. It's a prescription for wellness!

'Divided Time' Screens in Pittsburgh

Filmmaker, William Feagins, Jr. speaks to the audience.

It's been six years since Pittsburgh native and graphic designer/video producer/film director, Will Feagins, Jr. left the city. Headed down south, he found his home in Atlanta where the work he'd begun in Pittsburgh took root in the indie hip-hop scene. As a self-professed child of hip-hop, Feagins anchored his creativity in developing a mode for artists to tell their stories and has since directed videos and documentaries for powerful artists such as Pittsburgh's own, Charon Don and Jasiri X.

A humble whiz with technology, Feagins has since grown his video work into the production of documentary films, with the most recent gaining screen time at festivals around the country. Returning to his roots, Feagins brought 'Divided Time' to the Row House Theater in Lawrenceville on March 7. The documentary chronicles the stories of Black men and hip-hop, family and creativity, priority and perseverance. If you didn't know about it to come to the screening, check out the trailer below.

Many congratulations to Will Feagins, Jr and continued success for 'Divided Time' and all upcoming projects.

February 2015 | Legacy Arts Newsletter

*|MC:SUBJECT|*
Saihou Njie, Heinz Spotlight, and Community Events.
View this email in your browser
It's been a few short months since we began our newsletter. For the purpose of sharing news of not only the Legacy Arts Project, but also the Black arts community of Pittsburgh, we intend to utilize this platform as a voice for the happenings of 'the Burgh'. We intend to grow this into a consistent outlet that informs, educates, and inspires, all the while reaching an ever-expanding audience. As such, you will notice the expansion of our newsletter to include different sections, and this month, we start off with our Artist spotlight.

Artist Spotlight

Prime Time, an after school program offered by the Woodland Hills School District through the PA Consortium of Public Education, is where  visual and textile artist, and teaching artist to LAP, Saihou Njie currently lends his talents. He teaches, every Tuesday and Thursday, two sets of middle school students for an hour each. His methodology of infusing peace and creative exploration makes him a favorite of the students he teaches. The LAP began its relationship with Mr. Njie in 2013 when we honored him with a Keepers of The Flame Award. Since that time, we have been grateful to maintain a connection that enables him to share his artistry with us.

It should be noted that Saihou is an extremely humble and friendly gentleman. His ear-to-ear smile lights up a room upon his entrance and the activities he shares often lead to collective enjoyment. During the closing of his movement classes with Legacy, he would begin laughing, bringing forth a bellowing sound stirred deep from his belly. The effect would be infectious. Suddenly, all participants in the class would begin laughing uncontrollably. And that is a part of his method, bringing a consistent reminder that life is meant to be enjoyed and shared with others. His accolades are numerous, encompassing as many awards as he has artistic interests.

At Legacy, he has shown his visual artistry and movement, but he is also a photographer, tailor, and musician. A noted highlight in his career was when he served as a guest artist on Mr. Roger's Neighborhood where he demonstrated how to create Batik, an art form that incorporates wax and dye to create visual images on fabric, a technique for which he is widely known.
We honor Saihou Njie as our Spotlight Artist of the month as he is a living testimony of the power of art to inspire and transform.

Black History Month!

February is here, and we know what that means, Happy Black History Month 2015. Although we at the LAP exercise appreciation of our history all year long, we are utilizing this galvanized momentum to honor the work of cultural enrichment and uplift taking place throughout the community. We pay tribute to those, known and unknown, for their contributions towards spreading love, truth, peace, and joy in ways large and small. It is through the daily practice of loving ourselves that the world becomes a more loving place. We give thanks during this Black History Month to our ancestors, elders, peers, and youth who strive to create a more just world for all of us.

Please support the activities listed below, whether through attendance or spreading the word. Let us practice Kujichagalia and be self-determining by taking part in activities that reinforce the creativity, beauty and greatness of Black people throughout the world.

Haitian dancers, artist unknown

Haitian Dance In Pittsburgh

How do we begin to speak of the power of Haitian dance? Bringing a multitude of images and connotations to the minds of Americans, we have been led to distance ourselves from the traditional culture of Haiti for fear of the unknown. At the heart of the Haitian Revolution was the song, music, dance and ritual that galvanized the efforts of people to be self-determining. Through embracing the culture and traditions of the African ancestors of Dahomey, the people of Haiti were able to up-rise from the oppression of slavery.

And now, we have Haitian dance in Pittsburgh, serving as a reminder of, and tool for, our own self-determination. Kujichagalia, the Swahili word used during Kwanzaa, is the principle that says we "define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves, and speak for ourselves", and embracing the traditions of Haitian dance and music are an example of just that. By way of Talahassee, FL, instructor Genia Guirand brings her connection with her homeland of Haiti to share with other artists in Pittsburgh, youth and elder alike. Come check her out on Wednesdays at Sankofa Village for the Arts, 5:30pm - 7:00pm, then stick around for further Caribbean exploration with Salsa and More with Ryan Mitchell from 7:15 to 8:30. Both classes are $6 for adults and free for youth.

8th Annual Keepers of the Flame Awards was a success!

Taking place on November 15, 2014, the Keepers of the Flame Awards production was held at the Homewood Colisuem. This years awardees included, Helen Baynes, Poogie Bell, Chico Butler, Dr.James & Pam Johnson, Dr.Joyce Meggerson-Moore and William "Oba" Wells.

Helen's Juke Joint!

This year's production took a trip down memory lane as it recreated a 40s style juke joint that included an esemble cast of actors and performers. The show featured dance, drama and musical performaces all of which encompassed the honoring of the awardees.
"This was the most unique award show i've ever been to." said Chris Moore.
The show was developed around the idea of infusing the presentation of the awards into the actual production. Through the collaborations efforts of Legacy Arts Project members and Michele Betts, the original work culminated in a ground breaking performance with local artists having the opprtunity to perform in front of a packed house of 200 people. Designed to be interactive, performers mingled with the audience, encouraging them to feel comfortable and dance when the show called for it. Many have asked, "What's next?" for Legacy. Please stay tuned, as we will keep you posted.

Thank You!

This production reflected the aspects of a unified community, within and outside of the arts. Nine youth from Homewood and other surrounding neighborhoods served as wait staff at the event. Local businesses provided support by way of finacial contributions. With a cast and crew of more than 40 people, ranging in age from 5 to 85, the production reflected the diversity of the African-American community. This event highlighted the principle of Sankofa, of going back to remember what we have forgotten, and to bringing it forward so that we can build for the future.

Wednesdays With Saihou!

Art is in the air at Sankofa Village, especially on Wednesday evening. Our residency with Saihou Njie brings the spirit of art from the Diaspora to the doorstep of the Homewood studio.

“I try to teach people how to see to draw,” Njie said.

This is one of Njie’s art principles that he demonstrates for his weekly class, where he lends his artistry to folks of all ages. Originally from Gambia, West Africa, Njie comes from a family of artists. Njie picked up many of his art traits by watching his brother, who he describes as a natural artist, and by helping his parents.

“My mother was a fiber artist and she used to get me to help her at her work after school,”

When Njie moved to the United States for school at the age of 21, he studied photography and fine arts. He realized after graduating that art was a career path he wanted to keep following. To separate himself from other artists, he decided to focus on an art form rarely practiced.

“I figured the only way I can have a chance at being recognized is by choosing a medium that is not widely used.”

Known as abstract art, batik is an old tradition practiced in various parts of the world. It’s a process in which dyes and waxes are used to create unique patterns. Along with batik painting, Njie is also a photographer, drawer and designer.

Njie is teaching all the art forms he knows for his residency with Legacy Arts.

“I want to mix everything under one umbrella. I want to do the movement, almost like it is a meditative kind of movement. All it is, is just calming the mind because when the mind is calm everything goes right.”

The beginning of Njie’s classes start with everyone sitting around in a circle and mediating. Afterwards everyone shares any ideas or thoughts they may have. Njie says you never know what good ideas can come out from that. Njie enjoys bringing out the creative side in the kids he teaches. He hopes to be a teacher that makes an impact in at least one life of the children he teaches.

“Everybody has potential and you can see that in kids. I try to find that thing in kids and encourage them.”

Dance Africa: Recap

During the finale performance of Dance Africa

This past April, Pittsburgh played host to it’s 3rd annual Dance Africa. Spanning from April 25 through the 27, this year’s events featured work from the Oyu Oro, Afro Cuban Experimental Dance Ensemble, Illstyle & Peace Productions, the Legacy Arts Project, as well as the Hill Dance Academy Theater.

The Legacy Arts Project Community Ensemble performed works of the African Diaspora, reflecting the linkages that exist between cultures.

Dancers from Legacy kicked off the celebration with a rhythm called ’Lamban’ from the old Mali Empire of Africa, welcoming everyone to the evenings festivities. The celebratory dance was followed by an ancestral memorial, which allowed the audience to participate by giving names of ancestors they wanted to acknowledge.

Along with the two shows that filled the bill, this year’s event integrated a fashion show into the intermission of the performance. Hosted by Wadria “StyleandSteel” Taylor to the tunes of DJ Paul Dang, fashions of the Ujamaa Collective, Fashion Africana, and Sofiya Mozley were gracefully worn down the runway, bringing a reflection of fashion from throughout the Diaspora.

Dance Africa: Pittsburgh 2014 was performed to an audience of approximately 540 people. Held at the August Wilson Center, the Legacy Arts Project served as a conduit to bridge local, national, and international arts to the city, demonstrating the power of culture, principles, and art for bringing people together.

The 8th Annual Keepers of The Flame event is already in progress. Scheduled for Saturday, November 15 @ 7:30pm and Sunday, November 16 @ 3:00pm at the Kaufmann Auditorium.
This year’s awards will be bestowed upon: Dr. and Mrs. Johnson (AAMI), Bill ‘Oba’ Wells, Poogie Bell, Joyce Meggerson-Moore, and Chico Butler.

The Four-Fold Way: Walking the Paths of the Warrior, Healer, Teacher and Visionary.
–Harper Collins

If you ever feel yourself feeling disheartened, dispirited, or depressed, take a moment to ask yourself these four questions.

When did you stop dancing? When did you stop singing? When did you stop being enchanted by stories? When did you stop finding comfort in the sweet territory of silence?

Dancing, singing, storytelling, and silence are looked at as the four universal healing salves.

When we have stopped any of the four salves we have experienced the loss of soul.
